 Eid ul Fitr holidays for federal government institutions

All ministries and other federal government institutions will be closed for work from Monday, September 29, 2008 (Ramadan 29) until Sunday, October 5, 2008 when work resumes in all those institutions, according to a circular issued yesterday by Minister of Health and Chairman of the Civil Service Commission, Humaid Mohammed Al-Qattami.

The highly anticipated annual Ramadan '&' Eid Festival has commenced at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre, welcoming over 1,000 exhibitors showcasing consumer goods from 11 countries.

 Khalifa Foundation to intensify Ramadan charity programme in Palestine, Iraq

The Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan Charity Foundation is to intensify its charity programmes in Iraq and Palestine during the holy month of Ramadan.
Minister for Presidential Affairs and Board Chairman of the Foundation, H.H. Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan has ordered the foundation to provide the best services for Muslims in those countries through the "Iftar meal" programme which the foundation organises in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme.

 Ramadan cannons keep historic tradition alive

Historically, the Ramadan cannon has served as a means to announce the end of the fast at sunset. However, today it plays an important but different role, namely to keep Ramadan traditions alive.
The firing of the cannon is believed to date from the early days of Islam, when the Fatimid caliph instructed that a cannon be placed at the highest point of a city so that during Ramadan, all Muslims would be able to hear the shot signaling the end of the fast at sunset.

The 2009 Dubai World Cup (Group 1), the world's richest thoroughbred horse race worth $6 million, will be held on Saturday, March 28, at Nad Al Sheba.  Open Sports Festival kicks off tomorrow

This year's Ramadan Open Sports Festival organised by the Armed Forces Officers Club (AFOC) starts on Tuesday with a total prize fund of Dh14 million on offer. The annual event, which is being held for the 12th successive year, starts tomorrow on the second day of Ramadan and will extend over 24 days.

A number of renowned Muslim scholars from various Arab and Islamic countries have arrived in the UAE at the invitation of President H.H.  RCA mobilises resources for Ramadan charity drive

As the holy month of Ramadan is at the doorsteps, the Red Crescent Authority (RCA) has started mobilising its resources to begin a collective charity drive at home and abroad. Playing its role in alleviating poverty and destitution, the RCA has sent charity caravans to over 50 countries. RCA volunteers will oversee the distribution of foodstuff, clothing and Zakat-al-Fitr in those countries.

 RCA plans to set up 75 Ramadan tents in UAE

The Red Crescent Authority (RCA) will set up 75 Ramadan tents across the country and as the holidaymakers return home and donations increase, the number of tents will go up to around 200.
Apart from Iftars, RCA is raising money for several other projects connected with Ramadan. Traditionally, during the three days of Eid at the end of the holy month, new clothes are gifted to the needy, especially children.

President H.H Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan yesterday granted an executive pardon to 700 Emarati and expatriate prisoners to mark the advent of Holy Month of Ramadan. The working hours for the private sector will be reduced by two hours during the holy month of Ramadan.
Dr Ali Ebrahim Al Hosani, Acting Undersecretary of the Ministry of Justice, told Khaleej Times that the working hours are automatically reduced by two hours in all private sector establishments during the holy month. The rule applies to all workers regardless of their religion, whether they are fasting or not.
