A group of judges huddled in the middle of the central competition area comparing notes on the 10 towering camels tethered to the sides of the pen.

Forty-eight Nabati poets will be competing in the third season of Millions' Poet contest which was inaugurated at Al Raha Beach Theatre in Abu Dhabi on Thursday.

The emirate of Dubai once relied on fishing and pearling as its major economic trades, during the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Many people inhabiting the Gulf Coast at the time relied on pearling during summer months and farmed dates in winter.
Although the First World War impacted heavily on the pearling trade throughout the region, the invention of cultured pearls (created under controlled conditions) and the economic depression of the 1920s-30s dealt a major blow to trade in Dubai.

Fort regains former glory for public Posted on 02/12/2008
Al Jahili Fort, one of the biggest forts in the country and one of the oldest buildings in Al Ain, will reopen on Wednesday after being closed for 18 months to allow for renovation.
The former summer residence of the Abu Dhabi royal family, built by Sheikh Zayed the First in 1898, will open to the public after an evening ceremony celebrating the UAE's 37th anniversary.

Intensive efforts to preserve historic buildings of Al Ain Posted on 03/09/2008
Intestine efforts are undertaken to preserve and restore the historic buildings in Al Ain City, said Mohammed Khalaf Al Mazrouei, Director General of the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH), the government agency in charge of overseeing the initiative.

Al Ain is on the Tentative List of World Heritage Sites of UNESCO, announced Sheikh Sultan bin Tahnoun Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage (ADACH).

The UAE's cultural heritage will be showcased in a new bilingual website to be set up by The Young Arab Leaders UAE Chapter and Zayed University. Zayed University students will generate content for the website, which will be set up in partnership with UK-based consultancy EUCLID.

First pearl convention aims to revive traditional trade Posted on 30/08/2007
The first International Pearl Convention will be held in Abu Dhabi and Dubai in November to revive the pearl industry in the UAE.
