UAE authorities are strictly implementing a ban imposed by the General Secretariat of Municipalities (GSM) on Chinese dairy and related products because of traces of the industrial chemical melamine in them. The United Arab Emirates, which is investing in farms in Asia and Africa to ensure food supplies, will see its US$4 billion a year food import bill rise on population growth, the minister of environment and water said. The Sharjah Agriculture Development Corporation (SADC) has embarked upon a Dh120 million egg production project, which will occupy a total area of one million square foot. A rice shortage in the UAE due to export curbs is likely to ease in October when producers replenish stocks and boost supplies, traders said yesterday. Food safety programme launched in Abu Dhabi

The Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority (ADFCA) has launched a mandatory programme in food safety. The Essential Food Safety Training and Certification programme is aimed at staff of all food businesses in Abu Dhabi. The programme started on Sunday. UAE traders importing rice from Thailand

Traders in the United Arab Emirates are securing more rice supplies from Thailand, causing its rice exports to soar by 135 per cent.
