![]() Stronger regulations to preserve hammour

The Abu Dhabi Government is considering new fishing regulations to protect hammour in the emirate's waters.
Hammour stocks worth Dh24.2 million (US$88.8m) were fished in Abu Dhabi in 2007, government statistics show. However, the catch is declining and there are no limits on catching juvenile fish.
The Environment Agency Abu Dhabi (EAD) is considering stricter measures than restrictions on fishing introduced in past years.

 UAQ Marine Research Centre successfully hatches Hamour Larvae

The UAQ Marine Research Centre affiliated to the Ministry of Environment and Water has successfully hatched larvae of Hamour fish. The production of Hamour offspring came at the end of a series of experiments conducted at its laboratories and the Hamour hatcheries in the emirate.  EAD monitoring fishing vessels

To complement its already existing surveillance of fishing vessels, the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi (EAD) will be adopting a useful tool to help track and monitor fishing vessels within the waters off the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. EAD will establish a Vessel Monitoring System (VMS), in its capacity as the competent authority responsible for Fisheries and Marine Resources Management in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

 New rule for fishing boats comes into effect today

Beginning today, commercial fishing boats will be barred from operating in Abu Dhabi waters if the boat owners are not present in the vessels. The Environment Agency–Abu Dhabi (EAD) had issued a decree in this regard in April this year and the law comes into effect from today. EAD officials said that by taking this measure, the government hoped to encourage Emirati fishermen to become active partners in the conservation, protection and sustainable exploitation of the fishery resources.

 Native wadi fish under threat

Diminished water tables, the introduction of non-native fish and pollution is affecting the survival of an indigenous fish species.
Colloquially known as wadi fish after their habitat, the first study of this species is currently under way and results so far have spread light on the threats mountain ecosystems and endemic species are facing here.
The main study site for this fish is in the catchment of Wadi Wurayah near Fujairah, which covers an area of 129 square kilometres.

 New decree on commercial fishing boats in Abu Dhabi issued

In a bid to preserve the UAE's marine heritage, a decree was issued on 18 April, 2007 forbidding commercial fishing boats from operating in Abu Dhabi waters, without the boat owner on board.
Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed, Deputy Prime Minister and Chairman of Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi, issued the decree, which is effective immediately.

 Large quantities of fish confiscated from Abu Dhabi Markets

During a regular inspection visit, the Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD) confiscated illegal quantities of Badh, known as Longtail silverbiddy (Gerres longirostris).
EAD confiscated 90 Kg of fish from the Al Ain Fish Market and 145 kg of Badh from the Al Mirfa Fish Market. The measure is in line with Ministerial Decree No. 186/2006 pertaining to the Prohibition and Marketing of Badh fish during the period from April 1st - May 31st, 2007, which coincides with the fish's spawning season.

![]() Fishing by Al Halaq in Abu Dhabi is now banned

The Environment Agency - Abu Dhabi (EAD) has issued a decision completely banning fishing via Al Halaq, which is a method of fishing using an encircling net, in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. The decision is effective immediately.

 Overfishing starts full-scale alert

Stocks of hammour are declining due to overfishing off the coast of Ajman, the Ministry of Environment and Water has warned.
The ministry's Water Creatures Research Centre conducted a study of around 15,000 fish in the waters of the UAE. The study was launched following concerns the fish were being caught illegally. Landing hammour is banned unless the fish are greater than 45 centimetres in length.

 Depleted fish stocks will not affect UAE

Everything is being done to reduce depleting fish stocks in the UAE with more than half a million fish released into the Gulf annually, according to the Ministry of Environment and Water. Fish farms in the UAE are working to increase this number to release more fish, mainly sea breams, mullets and rabbit-fish.

Fish in the UAE are free of disease, according to the Environment Agency Abu Dhabi (EAD).Officials at the agency denied that the fish in the UAE have any diseases.  Helping to restore dwindling marine resources

Marine life is getting a helping hand as researchers are increasing the number of fish in Arabian waters favoured by local fishermen. Fish eggs are cultured and bred in tanks until they become fingerlings [small fish] and released in the ocean. Up to 250,000 fish have been released into the sea and protected areas around the country this year with the aim to match the number currently caught by fishermen and to keep fish reserves up.
