![]() EAD tracks sooty falcon migration

A single adult Sooty falcon has been successfully tracked to its wintering areas in Madagascar. This is the first satellite tracking of Sooty falcon, locally known as Saqr Al Ghurba, anywhere in the world, according to the Environment Agency-Abu Dhabi (EAD).
EAD has been undertaking studies since the year 2002 to further understand how to better conserve key bird species in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi.

For centuries, falcons were used in the UAE as hunters, trained by the Bedouin tribes.
The hunters would catch the birds, train them to catch prey and then release them once the season was over.
Today, falconry is practised as a sport and is still a popular, traditional pastime in the country.

The International Hunting and Equestrian Exhibition (Abu Dhabi 2008) will host the first beauty contest for hybrid falcons only, organizers of the event said.

 Injured falcons on the wing again

At first, medical staff feared it was a hopeless case. The young falcon was near death after diving under a moving car while hunting. Four months later, and after six operations that included feather implants and a new plastic ear, Baby was at home with her owner and once again chasing her prey across the desert.
"I just couldn't give up,” said Dr Margit Muller, the director and chief vet at the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital. "One look at its pleading eyes and my heart just melted.”

National Avian Research Centre (NARC) has plans to release thousands of Houbara Bustards into the wild. The decision follows the centre's success in captive breeding at its facility in Suweihan. The Houbara is listed as an endangered species and its population in the wild is fast decreasing as a result of over-hunting. It is also the favourite quarry of Arab falconers and its could have serious a social and cultural impact in the UAE.

Falconry and traditional Bedouin lifestyles will be showcased at a multi-million dirham desert village project to be built in Abu Dhabi. The team behind the centre intend it to become a major attraction for tourists and future generations of Emiratis.  Mohammed donates Dh7.5m for preservation of falconry

General Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince and Deputy Supreme Commander of the UAE Armed Forces, yesterday donated Dh7.5 million to the Falconry Heritage Trust. The money was handed over to the trust by Shaikh Sultan Bin Tahnoun Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority and Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage.

 Arab falcons take to the Berkshire skies

The UAE had a large presence at the International Festival of Falconry in the UK, with 70 Emiratis running themed stalls. A parade of UAE falconers, Bedouin tents, camels and saluki dogs were all on show in the English countryside. Teams from over 30 other countries also took part. Visitors and tourists to Dubai have shown great enthusiasm at the newly-opened National Falcon Centre at Nad Al Sheba, which offers sale of falcons and all accessories related to falconry.  Dh100m is spent on falconry every year

Every year the UAE government spends Dh100 million on falconry. The investment is for the protection of the wild falcon and increasing awareness of this endangered species. "No other country spends this amount of money for the benefit of the wild falcon," said Mohamed Khalaf Al Mazrouei, Director General of Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage.  Hospital that keeps falcons in good health

The Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital (ADFH) has more than 80 patients at present. "There can be as many as 4,000 patients in a year. Falcons are our main specialty. But we also treat other birds like parrots or pigeons," said Dr Raj Ragavan, one of the two doctors at the hospital.
ADFH is the largest public aviary hospital in the Middle East, founded in 1999 by the Abu Dhabi Environment Agency. It has just completed a full renovation. The hospital now has more space and state-of-the-art equipment.
